What is Liberal Arts?
Working towards a one particular stream does not have much value. Gone are those days when people want to master at one particular field. In today’s world we should have knowledge in all the fields. World is dynamic and so are the opportunities, so we should be ready to take it up. This is where Liberals arts comes into the picture. In liberal arts courses will be in general areas of study like the mathematics, literature, art history, economics, languages etc. rather than in one applied or specialized fields. The main idea of liberal arts is not to prepare you for a specific job but make you flexible enough to adapt to the requirements of the current situation. We all know how important it is to get the right “skill-sets” to attract the employer. In such situation liberal arts can add value to your skills which will be helpful for you to climb the ladder in life. Few people may think that focusing narrowly on one particular professional area of study will get the right job. That would be an excellent thinking but at the same time, you cannot shy away from the arts subjects as they are also equally important in the day to day activities of your professional life. Firstly, a liberal arts education does provide you with tangible, practical skills that employers value highly. What is more is you will obtain skills and knowledge that will never become obsolete. There are a lot of skills, abilities and attributes that you can learn from liberal arts:
· Analytical and knowledge-building skills
· Creative and critical thinking skills.
· Effective oral and written communication skills.
· Problem solving and pattern intelligence skills.
· Numerical skills.
· Ability to pose meaningful questions that advance understanding and knowledge.
· Exercise of independent judgment and ethical decision-making.
· The ability to meet goals, manage time, and complete a project successfully.
· Self-confidence and self-understanding.
· Ability to co-operate with others and work in teams.
· Openness to new information technologies.
Why Liberal Arts?
Reasons:
1.1 Financial Aid:
Most of the liberal arts colleges are private institutions with higher prices than public universities. However, most of the private liberal arts colleges offer a lower net price to student. The financial aid offices are able to offer scholarships based on merit, talent, and need. Based on these facilities student find that they pay either equal or at times even less when compared to that of the public university.
1.2 Campus Community:
There seems to be a lot more rust and friendship among the people, especially in your first year. With smaller student populations, students have the opportunity to meet most of the students at their college. Liberal arts colleges are usually close-knit and the students spend a lot of time together, which can make it feel a bit more like “home.”
1.3 Student Activities:
Liberal arts colleges usually have fewer number of student and activities when compared to that of the larger universities, but participation tends to be higher. There are more opportunities for leadership positions, because there are fewer students. The smaller communities found at liberal arts colleges also allow students to participate in a student organization in which they are not majoring.
1.4 Critical Thinking:
Most of the courses at larger university have a lot of students, as a reason all the classes are usually lecture-style where the information is told to the students. However, liberal arts classes are usually smaller and include classroom discussions almost on a daily basis. Students have the opportunity to hear different perspectives, communicate their thoughts and ideas, and think critically.
1.5 Well-Rounded Education:
Many academic programs at large universities are designed with very specific course requirements and do not allow the students much to explore other areas of study. However, liberal arts colleges allow students to take classes in many subjects like an overview of the arts, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences etc.
